Security Ideas for Desert Locales

I have given some thought to the defensibility of a desert location in a SHTF scenario, and here is a summary of my observations:

Most desert terrain supports sparse vegetation, or at least vegetation that does little to impede visual surveillance. As such, this is both an advantage and a disadvantage to those who wish to defend a homestead/retreat in the desert. For the advantage side, desert terrain generally permits observation over great distances, particularly concerning the approach of vehicles (which usually kick up dust clouds that can be seen for many miles). This makes a surprise assault by hostile forces much more difficult to achieve--when the defenders are vigilant anyway. The principle disadvantage is that the ability to observe over great distances is afforded to the hostiles as well. This means that the defenders must be even more cautious about chosing locations for their structures and employ camouflaging techniques to keep their homesteads/retreats from being spotted by (potential) hostiles.

Another concern about desert terrain is that, unless it is also mountainous, the defenders will have no natural terrain features to prevent an approach to the property from any direction. This means that they must be able to defend against attacks from anywhere in a 360 degree arc! Places with heavy woods, deep/wide/swift rivers and cliffs are more easily defended because approach from at least one direction is effectively blocked (but even these locations will be monitored by prudent defenders). When looking for land, would be homesteaders/retreaters should consider terrain that can 'funnel' movement into narrow corridors that are much easier to defend.

If intruders are expected in the area, desert dwellers must practice flawless operations discipline to avoid detection and becoming a target. This includes noise, odor and light discipline. This is because any man-made sights, sounds and smells can be detected over great distances in the desert and give invaders ample time to prepare a plan of attack. Buildings, fences and other tell-tale signs of habitation will attract invaders, so a desert dweller should do whatever possible to minimize the appearance of these structures. Generators running, the sounds of farmstead animals (chickens, cows, sheep, goats and dogs), talking/shouting and music are all audio indicators of habitation, and should be minimized or eliminated to the greatest extent possible if intruders are suspected of being near or in the area. The smells of cooking or other fragrances not natural to the environment can also betray your location, so these must be controlled as best you can. Smoke is not a normal thing to see in a desert environment, and can be seen during daylight for many miles, and any form of man-made light during nighttime will attract intruders from similar distances.

Build your homestead/retreat well off any main roads (especially any that are paved) and if possible out of view from any such roads. While many desert locations are not at risk of large scale movement of potential intruders, any rural areas that lie between cities which have major highways will be at greater risk of intrusion by refugees or looters should the cities ever be evacuated.

Get to know your neighbors and when possible, involve them in your security plans (if you don't have neighbors, you may want to encourage trusted friends to become neighbors, or join you at your homestead/retreat). Obviously this involves trust, so the sooner you can establish good working relations, the better. Good neighbors can act as an advance warning system, and if they are of similar mindset can assist in the security of your property. When doing so, always promote mutual protection and keep to your word! Desert environments are hard and require a rugged mindset, so having good neighbors can only benefit everyone! Mutual support is the only way to go!

USDA found to be poisoning bird populations, causing mass die-offs involving millions of birds

(NaturalNews) Not all the mysterious bird die-offs that have been witnessed around the globe recently are due to unexplained causes. A recent mass die-off event witnessed in Yankton, South Dakota was traced back to the USDA which admitted to carrying out a mass poisoning of the birds.

After hundreds of starlings were found dead in the Yankton Riverside Park, concerned citizens began to investigate. Before long, a USDA official called the local police and admitted they had poisoned the birds. "They say that they had poisoned the birds about ten miles south of Yankton and they were surprised they came to Yankton like they did and died in our park," says Yankton Animal Control Officer Lisa Brasel, as reported by KTIV (http://www.ktiv.com/Global/story.as...).

The USDA then confirmed the story and explained it was all "part of a large killing" in Nebraska. Some of the birds that ate the poison apparently flew all the way to Yankton before succumbing to the poison.

USDA mass-murders birds on a regular basis

So why was the USDA poisoning birds in the first place? A Nebraska farmer was apparently complaining that the starlings were defecating in his feed meal. The answer to this conundrum apparently isn't to cover your feed meal but rather call the USDA and ask them to poison thousands of birds.

The USDA complied, apparently agreeing this was a brilliant idea. So they put out a poison called DRC-1339 and allowed thousands of birds to feed on that poison.

Carol Bannerman from USDA Wildlife Services ridiculously claimed the bird kill was also to protect "human health."

"We're doing it to address, in this case, agricultural damage as well as the potential for human health and safety issues," she said. That's just a lie, of course. In what universe do starlings pose a threat to human health and safety?

The USDA even has a name for this mass poisoning program: Bye Bye Blackbird. Through the use of poisons such as DRC-1339, the USDA has killed more than four million birds over the last several years, reports Truthout (http://www.truth-out.org/bye-bye-bl...).

Remember, these are mass bird killings that are funded with your tax dollars. It all makes you wonder whether the government is, in fact, responsible for many of the other mysterious animal deaths that have been reported across the country (and around the globe).

It also makes you wonder: If the federal government thinks nothing of murdering 4 million living, breathing birds, then what else might they be capable of doing out of a total lack of respect for wildlife?

And if the USDA poisons birds because certain groups become too populous, what do you suppose is planned for when human population grows too large?

Feds target airline pilot for exposing TSA security sham on YouTube

A Sacramento-based airline pilot is the subject of a federal investigation for exposing what he says are serious flaws in the U.S. Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) airport security protocols. According to ABC News10 in Sacramento, the 50-year-old pilot who requested to remain anonymous says that TSA applies its strict screening protocols to passengers and even flight crews, but ground crews are freely able to access secure areas with a simple card swipe.

"As you can see, airport security is kind of a farce," the pilot explains in his video, as he shows an entrance to a secure area. "It's only smoke and mirrors so you people believe there is actually something going on here."

The pilot has worked for his airline for more than ten years and had been issued a federal handgun to carry with him in the cockpit. But after blowing the whistle on the serious security breaches taking place at the airport, four federal air marshals and two sheriff's deputies shows up at his house to confiscate the weapon, and they also asked him to give up his state-issued concealed weapon carry permit.

On December 6, the pilot also received a letter from the TSA explaining that "an administrative review into your deputation status as a Federal Flight Deck Officer has been initiated," a move that he believes is a warning from the Feds saying not to mess with the system, unless you want to face the consequences.

(NaturalNews) A swine flu pandemic is sweeping through Britain despite the fact that 70 percent of Britain's over-65 population was vaccinated against swine flu last year. This year, that number is nearly the same -- 68.5% -- but flu vaccine proponents insist that until everyone is vaccinated, the flu will continue to infect people.

What these vaccine advocates absolutely will not admit, however, is how many of those who are sick with the flu this year also got vaccinated last year. This little detail is left out of every mainstream media report on vaccines and the flu. They simply refuse to mention this all-important number, leaving readers to leap to the incorrect conclusion that only those who were not vaccinated get sick with the flu.

Most infected patients were previously vaccinated

That assumption is false. In fact, of the 450 critical care beds in England that are now occupied by flu patients, I have no doubt that most of those infected patients are people who received flu vaccines in the past.

Such statistics are never made available to the public or the press, of course. To release such statistics would expose the Great Lie of the vaccine industry: That flu vaccines simply don't work on 99 percent of people!

In fact, the people who are most susceptible to catching the flu are precisely the very same people who get vaccinated. Why is that? Because vaccines weaken the immune system in the long run, leaving you more vulnerable to future infections. They deny your immune system the opportunity to practice its own adaptive response to invading microorganisms or viruses, thereby causing your immune system to atrophy in the same way that a wheelchair-bound person will experience leg muscle atrophy.

The immune system is a lot like a muscle: Use it or lose it!

But flu vaccines provide weakened viruses to the immune system (along with other preservative chemicals that can be extremely dangerous to neurological health). It's sort of like working out your muscles at the gym but having your trainer do all the heavy lifting for you. Obviously you're not going to have very strong muscles in the end because your body won't need to invoke a very strong adaptive response.

The same is true with vaccines and the flu: If your body is exposed to weakened flu viruses year after year, it gets lazy and weak, and when it one day comes into contact with a full-strength virus circulating in the wild, it's not in good enough shape to handle the challenge.

Vitamin D deficiency is widespread in Britain

At the same time this is going on, a person who is vitamin D deficient will also have an alarmingly weak immune system response because vitamin D activates the immune system to do its job. In people with extremely low vitamin D levels, even vaccines containing weakened viruses won't solicit an antibody response. But instead of testing patients for vitamin D deficiency and prescribing that with the vaccine, conventional medical doctors and contagious disease authorities robotically urge everyone to just "get multiple vaccine shots" as if following one failed vaccine with yet another failed vaccine will somehow make them both work.

That's idiotic, of course. And the other idiotic thing about all this is that if people had sufficient levels of vitamin D circulating in their blood, they wouldn't need seasonal flu vaccines in the first place! That's because a strong, healthy immune system with lots of circulating vitamin D is universally effective at halting ALL seasonal flu strains, with near 100% success in those with vitamin D levels between 50 - 70 (ng/dL).

The three main reasons behind Britain's flu pandemic

So the real reason Britain is suffering a swine flu pandemic right now is actually three-fold:

#1) It's winter in the Northern Hemisphere, and Britain is so far north (of the equator) that the people living there aren't currently generating any vitamin D whatsoever. This makes virtually the entire British population ridiculously vitamin D deficient throughout the winter.

#2) The majority of the British population has been subjected to flu vaccines in previous years, weakening their immune systems and making them more vulnerable to this year's flu strains.

#3) The flu strain itself is so successful in the wild precisely because so many Britons walk around in chronic states of immune suppression (from vitamin D deficiency, chronic stress, poor dietary habits and so on). This creates a "viral breeding ground" which encourages more rapid virus mutations that make vaccines obsolete anyway.

The question you are not allowed to ask vaccine quacks

The vaccine-pushing quack medical community believes that if they could magically convince 100 percent of the people to get vaccinated, they would have this problem licked. In their own minds, they have unscientifically convinced themselves that a vaccine equals automatic and full protection against a flu virus.

And yet even they won't dare ask this simple question: Of all the people sick from the flu who are right now lying in Britain's hospital beds, what percentage were vaccinated against the flu last year or this year?

The answer to that question will expose the outright fraud of the vaccine industry because the answer is a very large number. No one in the medical industry dares ask that question, of course, because they realize that delving into the actual re-infection rate of flu vaccine recipients would expose their quackery and fraud, causing yet more people to lose faith in vaccines which are, after all, sold based entirely on misplaced faith and clever propaganda.

The flu vaccine propaganda, of course, demands that people never be allowed to collide with the scientific facts about how many people who are vaccinated against the flu still catch the flu anyway. (The flu re-infection rate.) That's why you will NEVER see an honest answer to this question released by hospitals, vaccine companies or vaccine-pushing doctors.

Keep taking your flu jabs, everybody. But don't ask whether they actually work, because that question isn't allowed to be asked in the cult of medicine that dominates the sick-care landscape around the world today.

We wouldn't want actual science to interfere with a really profitable con job now, would we?

Who's Your Daddy?

I'd like to broach a serious subject this evening. First let me admit I'm a dinosaur. I came from a time when we could leave our doors unlocked, leave our keys in the car, take our 22 rifles to school to be used for plinking on the way home. The place I come from no longer exists.
We are close to total collapse of the country we grew up with. What's to come is the great unknown.
I have political and religious beliefs that are deeply a part of me, it's a big part of what makes me.....ME. I'll drag this portion of me through what ever is to come.
Those of us that might survive the great culling will have a great responsibility, that is to rebuild a social order. This brings me to my point.
I have been asked by many to share a retreat situation. Because of my long efforts in survival preparation, knowledge and skill sets, I seem to be an attractive asset to many peoples notion
of a retreat partner or addition.
So far I have rejected all comers. Many who have asked are friends and I feel bad that I cannot become part of their clan in the face of certain days of sorrow. There is a good reason for my hesitation.
I have many firm beliefs about what has caused the destruction of my beloved country and I cannot compromise on those beliefs. If I survive the destruction and death about to befall us, I will be part of that chosen remnant that the burden of rebuilding will fall upon.
I cannot and will not retreat with anyone that adheres to morals and ethics that I feel are to blame for the fall of the American Nation. I won't for the sake of political correctness..(puke)..discuss those issues here but will urge you to think long and hard about what kind of folks that deserve to survive. Do you want to retreat with those that do not share your core beliefs?
I may end up alone...I may end up a cold blooded killer...I might make decisions on who deserves to live and who should perish. If that scares you then just try and imagine rebuilding a social order with those that have taken great steps to destroy what we knew as a beautiful nation...you know...we didn't have to lock our doors...we could leave the keys in our car....we could take our .22's to school....you know...America.
Make sure your retreat partners share your morals and ethics or they might just become your enemy.

Going Native

So one day I'm thinking to myself and I picture myself in a bugout situation. I'm in a forest somewhere between my home here at the White Rooster Ranch in the Nevada desert and my retreat. What should have been a 12 hour drive has turned into several weeks because of circumstances that prevent me from getting from point A to point B. Maybe the roads are blocked by rural communities that have decided they don't want strangers passing through, maybe civil unrest has caused thousands to flee the cities and they are robbing and looting everything in sight. Whatever it is I'm stuck in the low mountains in a wilderness area, secluded but still close enough to the hungry hordes to cause some concern.
I could take a squirrel or bird with my pellet gun or sling shot, however if I fire a shot with one of my blasters the bad guys would know where I am. So the answer is a silent primitive weapon.
I decided sometime back to get a bow and some arrows and start learning to shoot. I chose a longbow. It's a self bow, in other words a stick bow with no shelf for the arrow cut into it.
My bow is 72 inches, 50 pound draw weight at 28 inches draw length. For the first 3 weeks I was sore as hell from drawing that bow. I'm 60 years old and a 50 pound pull is a lot on this old frame. I kept at it though. I started by shooting at least 25 arrows a day, every day even though the pain continued. I needed to learn this primitive skill to add to my bag of tricks to survive the coming collapse.
I'm now up to 100 arrows a day and I'm getting pretty darn good with that hunk of oak and those cedar arrows. I feel pretty assured I could take a deer or hog at 35 yards without making a sound except the bow string twang. Certainly the zombies camped two miles away wouldn't hear the silence of my arrow. So I'm feeling good.
I chose the longbow because it is most like a bush bow or stick bow one might fabricate in the wilderness. I was afraid to buy a compound bow because if I broke a cam or pulley and had no spare parts it would be worthless.
I might run out of ammo...but I can always make an arrow, and, a bow if need be.
All my painful practice might just save my life.

Coming Full Circle

I will make a serious attempt to avoid politics and religion in this post. If some seeps through, please forgive me as it is difficult at this late date..(prepper wise)..to avoid my own thoughts on why this civilization is in dysfunctional gridlock and on the cusp of total failure.

I recently attended the 2010 Shot Show in Las Vegas. Immersed in the American firearms subculture, I had some insights that I presume were only fostered by my age and background,

I am a firearms instructor and as such I am familiar with all types of guns and gear,

I have trained with the best. I know folks that can present a handgun from the holster and deliver a deadly kill shot in 1/2 second. That is no exaggeration.

During my years as an instructor I have seen the best of the best. Handgun,rifle,shotgun,submachinegun and machine gun were the tools of our trade in our efforts to make better gun fighters of citizens, military and law enforcement.

For the past 12 years I have dedicated my life to preparation for the coming collapse of the world as we know it. A good part of that prep is firearms related due to my belief that some scum sucking moron will insist on stealing my last can of tuna when the stores close.

Now to the point. I've had a real change of heart about survival weaponry. Trust me, I've dwell-ed in the high speed/low drag tactical world of AR's and all the attachments..AK's and all the rest. There will always be those in the prep movement that will insist that guns and gear have to be expensive and "tactical" in nature. To that I say "bunk".

You would be far better off buying a few books on edible wild plants and forget about the laser.

So here is my thought, keep in mind this is the culmination of time and experience, forget the high tech gear and get a good old fashion revolver and a lever action rifle in the same caliber. Not that I needed any vindication on this concept but recently I spoke with a friend in another state that has a few ex Navy Seals as his circle of friends and to my surprise he informed me that his high speed/low drag buddies have thrown off the 40 caliber handguns..the mp5's and other notions of defense and survival weaponry and have come to the same conclusion. It seems the .357 6 inch revolver and Winchester lever action chambered in the same round have found favor among the former Seal gents.

I'm not going to dwell on this, and most of my instructor friends will assume I've lost my mind...(I sold my tricked out AR)....bought a .45 revolver and Winchester and with my .22 and shotgun, I'm calling it quits on the firearms hording and am now learning to make soap,

learning herbal medicine, making candles and a bunch of quiet past times to better prepare.

By the way, after attending the Shot Show and seeing all the latest gear for your guns, I fully expect that next year every AR will come with a ham radio, satellite dish and toilet seat warmer.

Wake up and Prioritize

The party was so wonderful. The house was warm with hugs, greetings, and shared tales of joy and heartache from the previous year. So and so had a new baby on the way. The hostess had just received a new customized dining room table so that she could seat her burgeoning family at meal time. A young man had just been honorably advanced in the military. Seeing old friends and making news ones was a great way to start the New Year. So why was I so distraught as I walked home? What was it that was interrupting my happiness from attending such an event? What a beautiful home. The food was scrumptious. What a choice person—such great hosts. What a great family. I was thrilled that they had opted to show me what they had done with all of the new food storage space they had built into their basement. That’s practically my favorite part of any home. As I reflected back on what I saw, I realized the source of my distress. A thriving family of nine. Plenty of space. Beautifully decorated. But a large food storage area that was frighteningly sparse.

As I had mentally viewed the intermittent stores of food, my mind quickly calculated that starvation would come to this family within only six weeks if they were required to survive on the fruits of their preparedness efforts. To add insult to injury, it would be a very boring and unappetizing six weeks as well. Oh how I didn’t want that for this family. Fifteen years of friendship makes me feel like an aunt to their children and a sister to her. I adore her. I look up to her. I cringed as I recalled her answer to my question. “Is this your entire food storage?” “Yep”, she replied. I couldn’t tell by her voice…was I detecting a sense of good intentions to rectify the situation or was it a sense of being overwhelmed with the task?

What good is a lovely home when an unexpected need for food, water, clothing, and fuel hits you? Who cares whether or not the sofa is frayed or if there’s a spot on the carpet when your family is hungry? I don’t know about you, but I’ve moved heaven and earth when I’ve had a specific craving for something. Imagine such a craving occupying your mind regularly, except it is simply for food and water. I realize that it requires some mental work to accept that such a scenario WILL occur in the future, but I promise you that it will. The Wii games, the latest reality show, the latest action-adventure film, or even what shenanigans the Administration pulls that week will be meaningless when one is unexpectedly thrust out of their modus operandi and has to actually THINK “how will I provide food for my family?” Most of us have never had to question the availability of food and water. For those of us who have, there has usually been a ray of hope right behind such a question in the form of an anticipated new job for the one lost, or even the ability to move in with family until things get better. But will the same hope be present when the supply of food, water, clothing, and fuel seems to be solely reliant on our own previous preparedness efforts?

I completely believe in being content and nurtured by ones surrounding. A home should be a person’s castle, inviting, comfortable. I love to spoil my family members and friends with gifts of love and acknowledgement. I like to look nice and wish that more “preppers” would portray a more polished and intelligent image to the community lest their message be minimized as an unrelatable and unreliable one. But just as the priorities for college students need to be their education—and thus traditional corners of comfort are cut to survive—so should we do the same in our basic preparedness efforts, sacrificing luxury for the security of being prepared.

As yourself before buying anything--Need or Want?
So here’s my rule of thumb. Don’t even think of gidgets, gadgets, generators, and the non-essentials in your life until you have at least the very basics of food, water, clothing, and fuel (where permissible) taken care of. Yes, you’ll never be satisfied that you are fully prepared for whatever may come your way. But yes, there IS a finite amount of food and water, etc. that you can at least start with and know that you’ve got a great foundation. THEN you can start building on it.

Newlyweds, let me address you specifically. No, you can’t afford a new television or cable or unlimited text messaging until you have your basics obtained and stored. It is a matter of life or luxury. Yes, I know that you’ve been quite accustomed to the leather upholstery, the beautiful automobile, and the abundance of comforts as you grew up in your parent’s home or when you were the sole beneficiary of your salary, but marriage is different. It’s a new life. It’s not a continuation of the one you had with your parents. Start new. Make it yours. Make it self-reliant. Make it solid by a good foundation of spiritual and temporal strength.

Ok. So what’s the absolute bare minimum emergency survival amount of food, water, clothing, and fuel (where permissible) you should have on hand?

■400 pounds of grains (i.e. pasta, wheat, rice, barley) per person per year (whole grains are preferred in order to benefit from sprouting)

■40 pounds of honey (or sugar, or molasses) per person, per year

■60 pounds of dry milk per person, per year

■5 pounds of mineralized salt, such as RealSalt (not iodized) per person, per year.

If you only had these 4 food items, you would at least survive a year in the midst of a major food crisis.

■60 gallons of water, per person MINIMUM. (This amount may at least get you through until you can find another water source—again, remember this is bare, minimum, emergency, survival amounts. In actuality, every person needs one gallon, per person per day just to take care of the minimum requirements of hydration, sanitation, medical, and cooking.)

■2 sets of appropriate, rugged, warm weather clothes and 2 sets of cold weather clothes per person. Anticipate the upcoming year. Store these clothes away, not have them be a part of the everyday fashion repertoire.

■52 cans of butane and a small butane stove for cooking and cleaning.

■Enough fuel for warmth during the winter months

■Enough fuel for light for about 4 hours a night, for one room, for a year.

So, here’s my challenge to you. It’s the very beginning of a new month. How about you put yourself on a non-essential fast when it comes to spending this month? In other words, if it’s not absolutely necessary (such as utilities, groceries, diapers, etc) don’t spend money on it. Instead use that same money on what you need to be prepared with at least the bare minimum amount of preparedness. If you’re already prepared in the basics that I’ve outlined above, how about you focus on adding to your preparedness this month?

What about your Skills?

We are seeing the dollar fall and possibly no longer be the worldwide dominating currency. We can see by economic indicators, and history that we are heading into a time of mega inflation, and outragous taxes. There are things happening before our very eyes that have some speculating a revolution of sorts. Not just us "right wing nutjobs" either. I am seeing on mainstream media what we preppers have been preparing and thinking about for months now.

So that brings the question...What skills do you have?

Kellene Bishop on Preparedness Pro discussed this awhile back, and I have been working on my skills of self suffiency and living off my own land, but that is not enough! So I have been learning the art of spinning yarn, and the process of preparing sheared wool into something spinnable. Not only do I have animals that have nice wool to be sheared and spun, but would be able to barter that skill, for either pay or services.

Jobs are shrinking by the month, and the cap and trade and other job diminishing legislation is still pending to get passed, but they will. I am certain as the Healthcare nightmare is getting pushed through even though 67% of Americans do not want it. So even though elections this year may change the domination of democrats, they have created a system in Washington that allows them to pass as they please. It is scary to think about.

So the need for us to have skills that are sellable in a market of need vs. want is very important. What skills do you have, or think would be valuable in this kind of atmosphere?

There are those of us who write our blogs for the good of the people. Then there unfortunately there are those of us who appearently blog for their own personal and financial gain. Shame on those people. Greed is the exact sin which prohibits us from growth in all types of spectrums.

I enjoy writing my blog as a part of the NEVADA PREPPERS NETWORK, in hopes to help people with resources and other people of great knowledge with the heart of a teacher, the soul of goodness, wanting like me to help mankind get through this challange in American history and be prepared even if a catastrophic event does not ever occur.

Something as simple as a layoff, etc. Will make all these things we learn here on the Nevada Site and all the sites encompassed by American Preppers Network so valuable.

I want to thank all of you who have taken the time to blog, pour their hearts onto these pages for the good of the people, and hope you continue to do so. As for those who are aspiring to make financial gain out of others fear and discontent will hopefully move on, or be seen by true preppers for what they are.

God Bless America, Freedom of Speech, and the ability to choose the path we want to take in live positive or negative.

The Honor In Being Brepared

Preparedness is a full-time job for me. I live it, breathe it, and think about it constantly. Obviously I teach and write about it regularly as well. I used a Saturday this weekend to learn about how I can be better prepared. Then I spent some more “spare” time reading a novel that illustrates other possibilities I may not be prepared for yet. Why? Because I believe that preparedness is about honor.

Many people would label those who strive to be better prepared as paranoid lunatics. And yet they would not think of calling our honorable men and women who serve in the military, who are on night watch with AR-15s in hand right now, “paranoid.” Are those of us who are watching carefully to what is going on around us and trying to mitigate our losses of life and freedom “paranoid?” No. A person who is prepared is honorable. They are willing to carry their own weight to protect themselves and those they love, instead of naively or cowardly delegating that responsibility to others. We are all night watchmen. We all need to honorably command our posts as careful guards over our family’s safety, nutrition, and peace. None can delegate that responsibility without bringing shame upon themselves. It’s hard to think this way when we’re enjoying life’s luxuries or being tossed to and fro with life’s schedule, but it doesn’t change the state of what truly is. There is honor in being prepared, not paranoia.

If you’re not paranoid, then surely you must be crazy, right? Tell that to the police officer who disciplines himself to train 3 times a week with his firearm instead of relinquishing his lifesaving skills to the whopping TWO times a year his department pays for firearm training. He’s not crazy. He values the breath of life—whether it be his own, his partner, his family, or members of his community. The Supreme Court says he’s not obligated to protect any citizen—he’s only required to protect the interests of the State, City or County he’s hired by. So certainly he doesn’t require shooting practice 3 times a week to protect a non-living, breathing entity, right? (Yes, that’s sarcasm.) We are ALL defenders of our community, family, and selves. We cannot delegate that responsibility to someone else—not today and certainly not in the future in the midst of some disaster. There is honor in being prepared, not a label of being mentally deranged.

Preparedness isn’t about hoarding. It doesn’t mean you have a scarcity mentality. If that were the case then there are millions of farmers, Amish, and Mennonite people throughout the U.S. that believe that the world as we know it will end tomorrow. (This list would also include the founders of Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s!) It isn’t hoarding to have a year’s supply of food, water, and other necessities. Rather it’s the epitome of the Boy Scout theme! Having supplies of food and water has nothing to do with hoarding. It’s about fighting back against inflation, poisonous food recalls, disasters, crazy crowds, limited time, future “nutrition” manipulation, water contamination, etc. It doesn’t take much more time to pay for 6 cases of chicken than it does to pay for one. And at least one who prepares is PAYING for their items. Would our critics prefer that we simply become looters in a time of trouble and chaos? I watch herds of looters on my television screen every time a disaster of a hurricane or tornado is imminent. And I still have yet to seen one of the cowardly opportunists be prosecuted in court. Is it not more honorable to financially stabilize our homes by being prepared with the bounty that is available now, rather than become criminals or desperate cowards in the future? Clearly, there is honor in being prepared, not a scarcity mentality.

Is there one shred of honor in the person who claims “I’m coming to your house when things go south” and means it? How would you respond if a person were to say, “When I run out of money, I’m coming to your bank account”? Or “When I get sick because I was foolish, I’m bringing my disease to your house to let you care for me.” “When I lose my job, I’ll just eat your food, have you pay my bills, and pay for my schooling.” Of course there’s no honor, integrity, or virtue in these thought processes. And yet it is these same individuals who mock and impede those who would prepare themselves for just such occasions. When one takes themselves out of the selfish “me, me, me” mode and begins to think about the care and nurturing of others, there’s honor. When one decides NOT to violate eternal laws by delegating the responsibility of taking care of their fellowmen to some governmental agency, there’s honor. When one looks past today to prepare for the well-being of those they love tomorrow, there’s honor. When one actually prepares to put themselves in a position where they actually HAVE something to share with others who have nothing, there’s honor.

Yes, there is certainly honor in being prepared.

Jamming! No Cook Freezer Jam

The lovely thing about Costco is their price on produce. Nowhere else here in Nevada can you beat the price of scrupulous heads of lettuce, large bunches of bananas, strawberries and more. Buying a huge lot and only using half still beats prices of other stores! Then for my small household what could I do with the leftovers to really get more for my money?

There are several options really; canning, dehydrating, flash freezing, OR my choice for today was making freezer jam! Now I have been accumulating things for canning all summer so I can put things away from my garden, but thus far the garden has seen better years.

What did I have in abundance today? Plums about half a box from Costco, and I had a package from Ball, No-Cook Freezer Jam Pectin, and 5 8 oz plastic freezer jars.

I cut up about 8 plums and put them in the food processor till they were a semi smooth texture, next I added the package and a cup and a half of sugar (i am sure Splenda would work too) and stirred it briskly for about two minutes, poured into the five jars screwed on the lids and Tada!
It really does not get easier than that.

Now I know if I have a lack of power I will have issues there but I plan on doing some serious canning when I have more fruit available but for now, this was just right.

Hold it... We CAN Save Cheese!

Today I practiced a lesson in cheese preservation. Like Kellene Bishop @ PreparenessPro I cannot live without cheese. So after some debating, I bought the Red Wax and Natural Brush and was ready to go for it!

I cant tell you how many times I just don't make it all the way through the cheese before it goes bad, and I hate wasting food so this was not just a practice in self sufficiency but also in frugality.

I read the blog from PreparenessPro about preserving cheese and I had to try it. Her instructions were impeccable and easy to follow. I however need to practice my dipping technique as you can see here.

So I purchased my products at a reasonable price from .cheesemaking.com and got my wax and brush promptly and was all set. Set a time that I could be uninterrupted and had let my cheese sit out till it was dry and about room temperature, I keep my home very cool naturally. Then I first brushed on my first coat (as you can see by the extremely chunky piece) on all my pieces then decided to do dip three times then brush one. There is quite a bit of wax on these babies, more than necessary I presume but for a first time try I don't believe I did to bad. However I think I will keep these first ones to myself.

The next chapter in cheese making is the Hard Cheese Kit from the same company and will soon be trying to make my my own cheese. After I have successfully completed that I will try it with the powdered milk from my food storage. Little steps... Little Steps. Lastly, I have several goats and hopefully soon a dairy goat as well and will try the Fresh Goat Milk cheese kit. I tried the Goats Milk from Trader Joes, and absolutely loved it! It was richer and creamier than whole milk, it was truly a treat!

If you have read about the upcoming Dairy situation, I thought it would be a good idea to get a jump start now, but then that is what we preppers do right?

The Agriculture Department is raising prices on your dairy products. (How they have the authority to do this is beyond me, but for now, it is what it is.)

Farmers claim that it costs more to make milk than they get to sell it. Guess what that means? Can you say milk shortage?? In June of this year, The National Milk Producers Federation said they would PAY farmers to slaughter diary cows in order to manipulate the prices higher based on “supply and demand.” (Despicable, I know.)

Michael Swanson, chief economist at Wells Fargo, told Bloomberg, “The milk price remains well below the total cost of production.”

Cheese is expected to increase in price SIGNIFICANTLY as is butter. What does this mean to you? Start buying cheese and butter while you can afford it, and then wax or can it so that you can have it on hand!

Homemade Cleaning Products

Today I am trying out the laundry soap recipe used by the Duggars, their site can be found here. The only exception to the formula is I used an ivory bar because I have been waiting two weeks for one bar of Fels-Naptha. have already tried the diluted softener sponges in place of regular dryer sheets. It works fantastic! So I had to try this out!

Their site got me thinking and sent me on a search of all the other cleaners that will be needed and what else can we do to become a little more frugal. My guess is that these homemade tried and true recipes may work better than the perfumed chemicals I buy at the store!

I just went on a search for Fels-Naptha and guess what folks, it is very difficult to find, as I have been waiting 2 weeks for a bar from Amazon. The washing soda is flat NOT AVAILABLE, and so I went to Ebay to search for these items. I finally found a decent deal on the Fels-Naptha, 24 bars for $40.00 which is a lot cheaper than the $4 and up for one bar I had previously found. This means two things, either it is in low production or high demand. By the washing soda being unavailable as well that tells me high demand may be the culprit.

So how is that an indicator the economy is turning the corner? I think what is keeping the economy going as it is, are those of us stockpiling and prepping. Just a thought.

I am curious what the readers think about Obamacare? Do you think it is anything to be concerned about, do you mind having more of your freedoms taken so the masses will have mediocre health care? Because to create savings we all have to give up the coverage we have now have a plan that will cover a LOT less and we the taxpayers will and pay a whole lot more.

Here is a thought to ponder, I have had all four systems of medical coverage. Private insurance, self pay, Medicaid, and Medicare. I can say with unbiased certainty that I received the best care with private insurance that was paid by my employer. While in the Medicaid system the services while free, were often not given the same quality of care and definitely the respect previously received.

Private pay, you pay full boat for your services with no contractual adjustment and get dragged over the coals. Dont forget that you must make completely overzelous monthly payments or go to collection. So while Medicaid pays $473.00 for a $4000.00 procedure, the private pay person is expected to pay the full $4000.00. So on and so forth..

Now here is the quandary, if the purpose of nationalized health care to save the middle American money and cover more people, then why, when one is approved for disability does one have do wait 24 months for Medicare as mandated by the federal government. Don't you think a person that has disability does not acquire medical bills within a two year period? How is that different than a pre-existing condition clause?

Stated a little more clearly the point you are approved for Social Security for Disability, Nevada Medicaid will drop you, period. Then for 24 months the disabled person has NO INSURANCE... until Medicare starts and either you hinder your health care and do more harm OR go deeply into medical debt. If you are disabled, you understand how deep that hole can be. Even with Medicare what you are paid in Social Security goes to the remainder of medical bills. This is how the government system works... is that how you want your tax dollars to work for you?

Where do we start?

With all the events taking place in the world, with economy in the tank, with all the nonsense being pushed through Congress in the middle of the night, with our soldiers engaged in two wars 8000 miles away, with a Presidential press conference to watch every 30 days, with unemployment on the rise, with North Korea mouthing off...how can those of us who chose to prepare actually manage to keep our eye on the ball and prepare? The answer lies in a few simple steps.

First, we must turn off the television. We all instinctively know to limit our children’s time in front of the tube. Should we be held to a different standard? Very little lasting good can actually come out of our time in front of the television. Right now, time is a precious commodity. How much more time do we have before (you fill in the blank)? I’m not suggesting to completely unplug; we must keep abreast of what is happening and keep a keen eye for your individual ‘trigger’ that identifies to you that its time to GOOD. Moderation is the key.

With all of our new found free time created by turning off the television, we can now concentrate our efforts on a building a viable and workable plan. A proper plan must always begin with the end in mind. We all have our own idea of what the future holds. What does that reality look like to you? Is it a nuclear catastrophe? Is it a revolution? Maybe its hyperinflation and civil unrest? Whatever your reason for being on this website & reading this blog is, get that vision crystal clear in your mind. Once its clear, consider what a day in that reality will look like. How did you get there? What skill set will you need? What items will you need? Will you need to be able to defend yourself? Who will be with you? Will your current shelter suffice? Commit these thoughts to paper and build a comprehensive ‘to do’ list. This list must be attacked with a sense ferociousness.

Lastly, prioritize and keep things in perspective. The natural tendency will be to try and tackle it all at once. That’s simply not possible. Prioritize! In your new reality, what skill(s), thing(s) will be most important to you? Protection? Food? Water? Shelter? I’d argue that not much else will matter if you aren’t right with your maker. If you are so inclined to believe in a higher authority, it will be helpful to remember that nothing you are or will experience is happening without his prior approval. If something is happening, it’s part of his plan. Keeping that thought in mind, prioritize your list...and get to work.

Spegetti Sauce Ala Thrive Products from Shelf Reliance

As you search for the best products to place in your food storage, it is best to give these things a try. Don't buy things you normally would not eat. That being said, Shelf Reliance has food options that others such as Mountain House did not have, such as whole eggs, cheese blend, butter powder, and tomato powder. So before I did a hefty investment I bought quite a few pouches of things to try. From Shelf Reliance and The Ready Store.

This one was a success! Thrive Tomato Powder, which I assumed could be made into a tomato paste for creamy soups and red sauces. To my delight it works perfectly, with no compromise in taste over store bought canned products. So with a few fresh things, and some hamburger meat I suceeded in making some darn good Spegetti Sauce. Yea!

My THRIVE Spaghetti Experiment:

2/3 Cup Thrive Tomato Powder
2 Cup Water .. or more depending on desired consistency
1 Diced Fresh Tomato
1 Grated Carrot
1 Small Can of Mushrooms
1 lb Hamburger
Dash of Garlic and Onion Powder

Add your preferred amount of desired spices

Simmer Sauce for 15 Min then add browned hamburger meat .. or meatless if you desire.

And Tada .. Better than Ragu.

I was impressed, next time I will use the carrots, mushrooms, and possibly some onion from THRIVE as well instead of fresh.

This will be added to my food storage recipe binder, and from them I have also tried the drink mix, and banana chips. Yummy. I think one of the appeals to me is the lack of preservatives and things I cannot pronounce, along with saving me money from going grocery shopping. I have not found a negative yet, but with my animals, and canning my gardens harvest I can feel better that my food supply is diversified and growing.

From Prepared to Practice

I learned a valuable lesson this weekend. That we can prepare, learn, create, and believe we are as ready as we can be for the unexpected. However, until we put it into practice we may not know if we are as prepared as we need to be.

I had intended to attend a solar cook-off in Taylorsville, California. To gather information for use here on the ranch, and also to share what I had learned with you. A week prior the lists were made, shopping done, two days prior packed the 5th wheel and got the ranch ready for us to be away for a couple days. We really thought we were prepared.

Now, very few trips have been made in the 5th wheel, and I really had not gone on long trip in quite some time. That being said off we go... two hours into the drive, we blew a tire on the 5th wheel. Luckily, my father is a wonderful driver and other than the damage to the 5th wheel inside and out, we were able to safely get to the next exit. Then we realized that yes, we had the spare but the tire iron was missing. We were unable to change the tire without assistance. Our tire was changed, new ones purchased and we were back on the road 15 hours later.

The trip went on and there were several things we forgot. As prepared as we thought we were we truely were not. So what about our emergency preparedness? Will we have what we need when we need it? Like having cans of food without a non-electric can opener. How do we know for sure?

Maybe a trial run will be an important part of our emergency preparedness. Put our skills to the test and do a simulation of an emergency medical situation, living without power for a few days, etc. Because everything we have done to prepare is useless unless you have all the tools to benefit from your self sufficient resources.

Ice Cream Sandwich

As I have been stocking up my long term storage, I have wanted to try some pouches of the very things I am stocking up on. So I know what I really want to have a lot of, and others to avoid. While ordering these pouches of freeze dried food I came across something I thought as odd. An ice cream sandwich.

So needless to say I HAD to have it, even in tough times we all need a treat now and then. Honestly? It was quite tasty! A Mountain House Freeze Dried Ice Cream Sandwich, other than feeling odd for not being cold, nor did it drip all over it was just as good. Maybe even a little more filling than your normal ice cream sandwich. I will order more..as I do love ice cream.

This weekend I will be attending a Solar Cook-Off, which I am sure will give me insight on a new way of cooking and I will be sure to share my adventure.

So everyone should have a first aid kit of some sort in the car, but what about at home? Sure most people have some band aids and Neosporin but what else do we need?
This weekend I started my first aid kit, and found that I there are a few things I need to pick up. I am curious out there, what do you all find important to have in your kits? Please comment and let us know!

Learning as we go

This preparation process can be very daunting, if you have not been a creature of this habit for years now. But don't fret every step we take today; is a learning experience, and one step closer to self reliance.

There are a few things that we really need to put thought into. Like diversification of our investment portfolios (or what is left of them anyway) we need to do the same for our preparations.

For example for the food storage you don't want to place all your eggs in one basket. Here is what I have done.

For the short term:

Bought fresh fruit and veggies flash froze and vacuum bagged. They will be good for one year.
Bought twice my normal amount of pasta, rice, flour, sugar, instant milk, and protein powder. Also used the food saver and vacuum packed.

For the Emergency without power:

Canned meats as I could, this included chicken, albacore, tuna, salmon, corned beef hash, beef stew, chicken and dumplings,
Case of canned corn, peas, broths, potatoes, and canned milk
Used the food saver again for sugar, cornmeal, cereal, cake mix, pancake mix, pasta, beans, dried peas and instant milk
Spices, Coffee, tea, hot chocolate
Extra canola oil and other cooking provisions
LABELED each box with what was in it and when it expires.

For the long term plan:

Years worth of #10 cans of veggies
A starter pack of # 10 can entrees
Live animals to breed and have organic meats.
A special #10 can of seeds that we can plant in the garden.

I plan to add to each of these three plans as I can, but i think it is a great start. So you may be wondering, what about non food items?

These are things we want to ensure for not just good hygiene and safety but there is only so much roughing it that is feasible. So I am starting my list for non foods items to include:

Toilet paper a couple of cases
Extra paper and cloth kitchen towels
Paper plates and utensils
Bleach
White Vinegar
Borax
Case of Ivory Soap Bars (for cleaning body and making cleaner with)
Washcloths
Stock up on underwear and socks for every household member
Disposable and cloth diapers
Rubbing Alcohol & Hydrogen peroxide
First Aid Kit essentials (I will save that for another blog but I put my own together)
Toothbrushes, Toothpaste, Ambosol and Dent u temp.
Deodorant, shampoo, and conditioner if you cant live without it.
Feminine Products and spare contraceptives (not sure about the expiration date on the last one but I would hate for someone to be in a bad situation in bad times, and not able to purchase birth control
Vitamins, Herbal remedies
Spiral notebooks and Pens
Learning materials in case your children are housebound! Workbooks are fantastic

As I write this blog I see lots of areas I will go into more detail, but this is a start! Naturally people with limited space, or living in an urban location would expand in some areas and not others that is really up to the individual but the important thing is to make it feasible to attain, and happily live. Make it a fun learning experience for the whole family. Not only is learning self reliance fun, but it is a skill that you can pass down to the generations. Especially if you write a diary of your journey and make binders of your new learned skills!

It is bad enough that the Government has determined that soda is not good for us so it must be taxed, along with the higher taxes on nicotine products which was already ridiculously high. It is preposterous to allow your health care to be determined by a governmental agency and not your doctors. Do you want your medical records open for the world to see, might as well. Do you think your medical records are accurate to begin with? You may be surprised with what you find. Just like your credit report that has flaws, and errors; your medical record does too.

Big Brother? Health House Keeps Patients 'Safe' by Watching Every MoveGov

So with Government watching how many times you open your fridge, wash your hands, and any and I do mean ANY move, that in turn will be used against you in paying for your health care. Not for your "safety". Do you want your safety in the hands of others? What makes Government believe that we as a whole cannot and will not think for ourselves? Does it take away from what our founding fathers intended? Definitely, Big Brother takes away freedom. It is amazing that no one understands that. Once it is taken away my friends we will never see it return. Like IRS and Income Taxes were to be a part time thing this too will be permanent. It cannot be allowed, the Health Care reform has to be scrutinized very closely by ALL of us while we still have a choice.

For example as I was a Medicare claim specialist for 9 years I had the opportunity to see first hand how Governmental Health care works, or should I say essentially does not work. Doctors and hospitals had to conform and compromise to Medicare rules which were usually absolutely ridiculous. Which, sorry folks in turn compromises the care of the disabled and elderly.

Here is a simple example; Medicare can say we will not cover this procedure, test, or hospital stay because they have a diagnosis of obesity. Now what if the diagnosis is purely secondary to steroid use for an auto-immune disease, asthma, or other inflammatory condition. What if the weight gain is contributed to thyroid, hormones or diabetes? Those are not normally included in a claim if they were not seen directly for that condition that visit. However as your blood pressure and weight are taken every visit it is commonly included in your diagnosis without your even knowing. Then the patient gets the bill and has to fight from there.

Sadly a persons care depends on what the insurance allows, or in this example the Government. We don't want this for our children, ourselves or our nation. We want our disabled and elderly to be treated with respect and dignity and not denied care because of the conditions they face. Not all illness is a result of bad behavior, but even if it was it should be our freedom to have our own practices in life. We forget that we have paid along with our employers into the Social Security/Medicare system and should not be penalized for its lack of ability to run efficiently.

My suggestions are to obtain a copy of your medical records from all your doctors, labs, hospital stays, etc. Go as far back as possible. Verify these records stem to stern for accuracy and completeness. When you see an error in dictation or possibly the doctor misunderstood you, make an appointment to discuss the errors in your medical record. I recommend making an appointment instead of calling so you can ensure it is corrected then and there. Then request a copy of the correction along with the current visit note. Once you obtain all your records make a habit of requesting them at each visit.

These records in your possession are good for many reasons;

You may require specialist care that you may need the information. No matter how healthy we are, our memories are not perfect and it is good to refresh ourselves of what was preformed when or what medications we have tried.
To verify accuracy and completeness in our permanent medical record.
For legal issues, we never know what will be sequestered and used against or for us in a court of law.
Lastly before our records become property of the Government which may happen we want to ensure what is in there is correct to safeguard our own care.

On that note I think I will enjoy a bubbly refreshing soda of my choosing... from while I still can.

Ham radio nets are a very coordinated and organized effort, so what I am hoping for is to show Ham's that we can coordinate a message thru this forum. I believe it would show them that we are being serious about this subject. What I would like to see is all of the sites come together and post this on the same day. I know many of you update your sites more than once a day but it sure would be great to show we can get everyone on the same page for one day on this subject. If we all do nothing now to get this working it will surely not work once SHTF. That being said, what I am hoping for is to help set up a network of HAM'S to run a net over the air. This can be used to promote more people to join the effort's Tom and everyone else are putting in to make this network grow. We will reach a whole new audience over the air and some will surely come join us on the Internet while we still have it. In the future this net could be used to keep all of us in touch when the Internet is not a option. This could also be used for a very quick way to exchange information on bartering and many more things in the future. In HAM radio we have the ability to spread this world wide thru radio waves but it could take forever to get this going strong without getting more Ham's involved before going ON THE AIR with a net. Most ham's are set up for emergency power operation so this is a way to communicate even when the GRID is down, which today is becoming more of a reality every day as our utility grid ages.

OK now I have done it in true DX fashion for all you HAM'S out there.
I know others that read this will be real confused now but I would really like to hear from you HAM'S out there so I figured I would write in a language you would understand. We need to get HAM'S involved here so we can try to get a net going to help with off the grid communication among the prepper networks. I know there are many Ham's already involved in the prepper network and many more that read so please come forward and help us with getting this going. So it is not just extremists, right-wing nut jobs, or the like. It is Americans concerned about our future from natural disasters, economic meltdown, and terrorist attacks. Some are just concerned American families realizing that we have lived for generations and taken life as we know it for granted and realized when it comes down to it, nobody really owes us anything and we want to be able to take care of our family IF the unexpected strikes! Personally, I think it is a good sign that people are taking the initiative to be ready and not relying on others or government to take care of their families for them.

Why Become a Prepper?

There are several reasons why I decided to become a "Prepper". The most important is to help my family be prepared for whatever life throws at them. To have the ability to help other people achieve the same. When my Mother was asked what her daughter did she said matter of fact "She is a people person, she loves to help people." At that moment I knew I had to redirect my efforts to achieve exactly that. Up until that moment my "helping people" entailed me lending a hand, always wanting to help people in times of personal crisis.

It's true, I hated to see people hurting, in any kind of situation; physical, emotional, financial, usually resulting in too much help, too much advice, and possibly enabling that person to continue to make poor decisions. I just want to fix things, and make people happy. The end result is my frustration when I could not understand why they were not better prepared or allowed their situation to get to it's current status.

Facts are, my generation (Generation X) has had a pretty easy laid back life, living paycheck to paycheck and moving home when things got tough. We were not taught that credit was bad, in fact collages across the United States had an applications for a Visa or MasterCard when you applied for school. Very few of us were taught self discipline and even less taught preparation.

This is something I don't want my family to learn the hard way, I want them to have all the advantages in life they can. Isn't that what every parent wants, the best for their children? It is what my parents wanted for me, to be armed with knowledge to be able to help and think for myself. As I think back some of my family's most cherished moments, they were not moments of financial bliss or going from dramatic event to dramatic event. The opposite in fact, laughter and deep conversation doing things together; canning the gardens harvest, my mother and grandmother going to the laundromat, my father working two jobs to keep it together, my family worked together as a team to ensure that we all were well taken care of....no matter what.

So if I can help someone here, today with a sparkle of knowledge, then I have done something worthwhile. I want to share what I have learned, and researched about financial independence, food storage, uplifting books, preparing for the unthinkable. I want for you what I want for my family. Preparation and peace of mind.

As we prepare for food shortages, Government crisis, financial meltdown why not add in a global pandemic? Is all the abounding crisis coming to a head at once seem a little fishy to anyone? Well we could discuss conspiracy theory's all day but that is not what we are here for. With the WHO announcing that the Swine Flu has been upgraded to a Level 6 Pandemic we all need to take notice, and prepare for quarantine. Some of us are blessed to live in the sticks and breathe a little easier, but we all need to know the facts. Masks along with immune system enhancers can be a helpful tool in this situation, they are good to have on hand. A lot of us take medications that lower our immune systems ability to fight by lowering our white cell count. Do you know if your medications do? A call to your Pharmacist or a look-up of the medications side effects should give you the information you need. Ignorance is bliss but knowledge is pure power.

Time to Stock Up!

So now I see that not only was my gut feeling right, but that regardless of the state of the Nation long term food storage should be something more families should have in place. Just like the emergency evacuation plan that families and schools have in place, this is something even more important. The ability to feed our families in times of strife. To have the tools for first aid and know how to use them.

Yesterday, I took the steps at long term storage, made some purchases that will ensure my families well being from The Ready Store, but I also found a site called Shelf Reliance which sells not only long term food storage, first aid, and the like, but the site includes tools to help you calculate what you need for any specified time and number of family members you have. You can pay as you go, and it estimates the cost per month. Each can includes not only the contents, but recipes and instructions for storage. They also have solutions for storage of these cans and normal canned goods as well. So I bought a few pouches to try it out. Very simple and user friendly, and wish I would have thought if that idea!! I will definitely let you know my opinion of the products when I receive them!

So how much long term food storage should a person have? Well financially three to six months of bills in your emergency fund is appropriate. So I would think the same of long term food storage to start with. I am able to go shopping I REALLY shop. So I could easily go three months without going to the store, other than for perishables. So this is just an extension of what I already have in place. Also just the beginning I am sure but we have so start somewhere!

So as quickly as one can blow money at a quick mart, fast food or the movies you can buy a can of food that will last 20 -30 years if it had to. A can a month and quickly your safety net will grow!
